Longest Spaceflight: Longest Spaceflight by American Explorer

Longest Spaceflight by American Explorer

NASA Astronaut Mark Vande Hei, who broke the record for the longest spaceflight by an American explorer earlier this month, returned to Earth on Wednesday.

Vande Hei  Capsule touched down in Kazakhstan at 7:28 a.m. ET, southeast of the Dzhezkazgan. According to NASA, he and cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov began their journey back to Earth in the early morning hours aboard the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft.

Vande Hei's ride with the Russians was part of a barter deal with Axiom, a Houston-based company.

Vande Hei, 55, had been aboard the International Space Station since April 9, 2021, spending 355 days in low-Earth orbit, breaking retired astronaut Scott Kelly's record by 15 days.

Scott Kelly Who have the longest record of spaceflight as an American Said that “Broken records mean we’re making progress”

Despite rising tensions between the United States and Russia over Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, Vande Hei's return followed standard protocol. A small NASA team of doctors and other personnel were on hand for the touchdown and planned to return to Houston with the astronaut immediately.

Vande Hei said he avoided the subject with his two Russian crewmates even before Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Despite getting along "fantastically," he's not sure they want to go there.

We are One Crew

In a recent live NASA TV broadcast, Shkaplerov said that People have problems on Earth but we are one crew in orbit. He said that space station as a symbol of friendship and cooperation, and the future of space exploration.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in his statement that "Mark's mission is not only unprecedented, but it is also paving the way for future human explorers to the Moon, Mars, and beyond,  NASA and the American people are delighted to welcome Mark home and grateful for his incredible contributions during his year-long stay on the International Space Station."

In a recent series of NASA videos, Vande Hei expressed his desire to be outside, making coffee for himself and his wife, and snacking on chips and guacamole.

Vande Hei 355 days in Space

Vande Hei orbited the Earth 5,680 times while aboard the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei returned to Earth on March 30 with Roscosmos cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov, breaking the record for the longest single spaceflight by an American to 355 days.

The trio launched from the International Space Station at 3:21 a.m. EDT and landed safely with the help of parachute at 7:28 a.m. southeast of the Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

Vande Hei's extended mission will allow researchers to study the effects of long-duration spaceflight on humans as the agency prepares to return to the Moon under the Artemis programme and explore Mars.

Vande Hei, along with Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov, launched on April 9, 2021. His second trip into space, which lasted 355 days, is the longest single spaceflight by a US astronaut, breaking the previous record of 340 days, and gives him a lifetime total of 523 days in space. On his first spaceflight, Dubrov also stayed onboard for 355 days.

Vande Hei completed approximately 5,680 orbits of the Earth and a journey of more than 150 million miles, roughly the equivalent of 312 trips to the Moon and back, thereby supporting NASA's goals for all future human landings on the Moon. He witnessed the arrival and departure of 15 visiting spacecraft and new modules, as well as the arrival and departure of 14 visiting spacecraft.

Longest Spaceflight by Man

Valeri Vladimirovich Polyakov, a Russian Cosmonaut, completed his second space flight in 1994–1995, spending 437 days in space between launching on Soyuz TM-18 and landing on TM-20, setting the record for the longest continuous time spent in space by an individual in human history.

Longest Spaceflight by Women

Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut, holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman (328 days), and will return on February 6, 2020. During Expedition 61 in 2019, she surpassed NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson's previous record of 289 days. Anne McClain, an American astronaut, is third with 204 days.
