What is ROM?

ROM (Read Only Memory) is a device which is used as data storage device  in computer.

It differs from other types of computer storage in that it can only be read, not written to. This makes it a perfect place to store data that needs to be accessed quickly and doesn't need to be changed often, like the basic code that tells your computer how to start up.

Read-Only Memory (ROM) stores critical information needed to run the system, such as the programme needed to start the computer.

  • It is not a volatile substance.
  • Its data is always saved.
  • Used in embedded systems or where no changes to the code are required.
  • Calculators and other peripheral devices use it.


Types of ROM

There are two main types of ROM: volatile and non-volatile.

Volatile ROM is the kind that loses its data when it's powered off. This type is mainly found in older computers and devices, and it's used mainly for holding program code. Non-volatile ROM, on the other hand, retains its data even when it's turned off. This type is used for storage, such as in digital cameras, smartphones and tablets.

Most modern devices use non-volatile ROM, which is why you don't have to worry about losing your pictures or data if you accidentally turn your device off.

MROM, PROM, EPROM, and EEPROM are the four different types of ROM.

PROM (programmable read-only memory)

This type of read-only memory may be programmed by the user. The data and instructions stored in PROM cannot be modified once they have been programmed.

EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-On Memory)

EPROM is reprogrammable memory. EPROM data can be erased using UV light to it. Delete all prior data to reprogramme it.

EEPROM (Electrically erasable programmable read-only memory)

Data stored in EEPROM can be wiped permanently without the need of UV light by applying an electric field. Only parts of the chip can be erased.

Mask ROM (Mask ROM)

Mask ROM is a type of read-only memory that is masked off during the manufacturing process. Mask ROM, like other varieties of ROM, does not allow the user to alter the data stored in it.

Think of ROM as being like the index at the back of a book. It's a quick and easy way to find the information you're looking for without having to leaf through the entire book.


Advantages of ROM

ROM is a great way to store information that you want to keep safe and accessible, but don't need to change or update often.

Some advantages of using ROM include:

  • Data is stored in a secure location and can't be accessed or tampered with without authorization
  • Data is easily accessible and can be read by many people
  • The Changes made can be easily tracked and monitored


Disadvantages of ROM

One of the main disadvantages of ROM is that it can be expensive. Additionally, ROM is not as versatile as other forms of memory, such as RAM. This means that it can be difficult to find devices that use ROM and that there are limited storage capacities for ROM when compared to other forms of memory.


How to use ROM

ROM can be used in a few different ways.

One way is to use it as an event log. This means that you can keep track of all the events that have happened on your device and when they happened. This can be really useful for troubleshooting or for checking to see if any unauthorized changes have been made to your device.

Another way to use ROM is by extracting files from it. This can be really useful if you need to access certain files on your device but can't because they're hidden or inaccessible. You can also use ROM to back up your device's data so that you have a copy in case something happens to it.



Difference between RAM & ROM

RAM (Random Access Memory) is a type of computer memory that stores data for short periods of time. This data can be accessed quickly by the processor.

ROM (Read Only Memory) is a type of computer memory that stores data permanently. This data cannot be easily changed by the processor.
