Hurhur or Cleome Viscosa has antibiotic properties equivalent to tetracycline and can cure different types of wounds and ulcers.

Cleome viscosa, often known as Asian Spiderflower or tick weed, is an annual herb that grows up to one metre in height. It belongs to the Cleomaceae family. It's an invasive species that thrives in hot, humid climates across the Americas, Africa, and Asia. It's typical to observe it during the rainy season.

The crushed leaves have been tried as a cure for weevil infestation in stored cowpea seeds.

As an external therapy, the leaves are applied to wounds and sores. The seeds have antihelmintic and carminative effects. Ear infections and pus discharge are treated using the juice of the leaves. In a study comparing it to traditional antibiotics, C. viscosa was found to be effective at inhibiting bacteria growth. This demonstrates its antibacterial activity when compared to the antibiotic tetracycline.

In northern India, the seeds (known as Jakhya) are used as a culinary herb, primarily for tempering.

Hurhur yellow (Cleome viscosa Linn.) It is 30-90 cm high, firm, sharp and pungent, erect, sticky herbaceous plant.  Its flowers are of yellow colour.


Hurhur white (Cleome gynandra Linn.)

It is 30-90 cm high, branched, glandular-ruminous herbaceous plant.  Its trunk and branches are covered with spreading hairs of lined, white color.  Its flowers are of white colour.  Its pods are 5-10 cm long, 4.5 mm in diameter, sticky and pubescent.  Its seeds are dark brown to black in color and are rough, kidney-shaped.


Ayurvedic Properties and Effects of Jakhya

It is responsible for breathlessness, bloating, anorexia, fever, eruption, leprosy, gonorrhea, vaginosis, urinary incontinence, edema, worms, colic, blood bile, worm disease and pandunasak. Its seeds are hot semen, gastritis, gulm, anah, aamdosha, colic, phlegm and rheumatism.

Yellow Hurhur is bitter, pungent, astringent, hot, dry, short, phlegmatic, receptive, tasty, heady, sharp, parting and swaddled.
