Thyroid

It is due to disturbances in the thyroid gland that thyroid related diseases like Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism occur in the human body.

The thyroid gland is located at approximately the same level as the Cricoid Cartilage below the larynx in our throat as a bipolar formation.  The thyroid gland is the main contributor to the body's metabolic process.

What is a thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands found in the human body. The thyroid gland secretes hormones called thyroxine (T4), tri-idothyronine (T3) and thyrocalcitonin into the human body.  It is through these hormones that the lack of energy in the body, the formation of proteins and sensitivity to other hormones are controlled.  Hormones released from the thyroid also affect the rate of metabolism and the development and function of many other physiological mechanisms.  Calcitonin hormones play an important role in calcium equilibrium (calcium homeostasis).Iodine is an essential component of both T3 and T4.

Normal thyroid function

The thyroxine hormone released from the thyroid increases the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates.  It reduces the amount of sugar, cholesterol and phospholipids in human blood. Thyroxine prevents blood loss in the body by increasing red blood cell formation. Thyroxine hormone regulates bones, muscles, sexual and mental growth.  It also increases milk production in women. The thyroxine hormone released from the thyroid regulates heart rate and blood pressure.

Types of Thyroid disorders

There are two main types of disorders in the thyroid gland:

The most common problems of the human thyroid gland are Hyperthyrodism and Hypothyrodism.

The thyroid gland is controlled by factors such as the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, etc.  The most common problems of the thyroid gland are Hyperthyrodism and Hypothyrodism.  T4 and T3 harmone are produced in excess by the thyroid gland as a result of hyperthyrodism, and the human body begins to use energy in excess. This is called hyper thyroidism.  When the thyroid can not produce enough hormones, the human body begins to use less energy than needed. This condition is called hypothyroidism.  These abnormal thyroid conditions can occur in a person of any age and the disease can occur in five to eight times more women than men.

Symptoms & Causes of Hyperthyroidism

Metabolis increases the metabolism in our body due to the formation of an excess of Thyroid harmone. The following problem arises.

  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Excessive sweating
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Shaking hands
  • Hair thinning Appetite
  • Nausea & Vomiting
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Muscle weakness and pain
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Weight loss even after feeling very hungry
  • Menstrual irregularity is seen in women.
  • Osteoporosis occurs due to which the calcium in the bone is rapidly depleted.

Symptoms & Causes of Hypothyrodism

Hypothyroidism occurs due to hypersensitivity of the thyroid gland which can cause the following problems in the human body:

  • Slow heart rate
  • Fatigue (Feeling Tired)
  • Depression
  • Be more sensitive to cold
  • Weight gain due to slowing metabolism
  • Thinning and breaking of nails
  • Sweat reduction
  • Skin dryness and itching
  • Joint pain and muscle stiffness
  • Excess hair loss.
  • Swollen Eyes
  • Impaired Memory
  • Confused, unable to think and understand
  • To be irregular in mensuration.  28-day cycle to be 40 days or more.
  • Swelling of face and eyes
  • Increased level of cholesterol in the blood
  • It can cause infertility in women.
  • Causes of Thyroid

The following are also causes of thyroid disease:

  • Being in a more stressful state in your life affects the activation of thyroid hormones.
  • Thyroid glands are particularly affected due to more or less iodine content in human food.
  • The disease can also be dynastic (genetic).  If other family members have had this problem in the future, then it is more likely to happen.
  • There can be an imbalance in thyroid hormones during pregnancy in women as many hormonal changes are occurring in the body of women during this time.

What diseases can cause thyroids?

Thyroid disease can also occur due to the following diseases:

Hashimoto’s disease

In Hashimoto's disease, one part of the thyroid gland becomes active.

Thyroiditis

This disease is caused by inflammation in the thyroid gland.  In the initial days, there is an over production of thyroid hormone and then later it is decreased, which causes Hypothyrodism. Many times, this disease is seen in women after pregnancy.

Deficiency of Iodine:

Iodine deficiency in daily diet causes Hypothyrodism, so Iodine-rich salt should be used in daily diet.

Graves disease

Hyperthyroidism is a thyroid disease in adults due to Graves' disease.  In this disease, the body's immune system begins to produce antibodies that increase TSH.  It is a dynastic (genetic) disease that goes on from generation to generation.

Goiter

Goitre disease can cause goitre disease.

Vitamin B12

Hypothyrodism can also occur due to vitamin B12 deficiency.  Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency correspond to the symptoms of Hypothyrodism.
